Transcendentalists were all about non-conformity and believed that everyone should stay true to themselves regarless of the circumstances. The song , "We're Not Gonna Take It" by the Twisted Sisters is an example of nonconformity through pop culture. "We're not gonna take it anymore. We've got the right to choose it and there ain't no way we'll lose it. This is our life, this is our song, we'll fight a 1000 legions. Don't pick our destiny 'cause you don't know us, you don't belong." These lyrics show nonconformity because the Twisted Sisters are expressing their independence against society. By stating the fact that they have the right to make their own decisions, the Twisted Sisters are refusing to conform to the norms of society. " I am not made like any of those I have seen. I venture to believe that I am not made like any of those who are in existence. If I am not better, at least I am different." -Jean Jacques Rousseau This is a great quote that portrays non-conformity because Rousseau is saying that being better is not as important to her as being different. It means that she believes we are all not made like the people around us and therefore shouldn't change who we for the sake of conformity.
